Learn about the use of 10-digit long code numbers for sending SMSs to recipients and their registration requirements
What is the “10DLC Numbering Service"?
10DLC is a numbering service in the United States that allows businesses to send Application-to-Person (A2P) type messaging via standard 10-digit long code phone numbers. 10DLC numbering services from the US Network Operators yield better quality service delivery and lower risk of SMS and MMS filtering than SMS being sent using long codes (TFNs).
What are the requirements when sending an SMS using a 10DLC Number Service in the USA?
From 1 September 2023, SMS and MMS messaging to the USA using 10DLC phone numbers requires that all messages must be sent via a registered campaign. Failure to do so will result in messages sent from numbers with unverified campaigns being blocked.
Campaign verification for the use of 10 DLC numbers has formally been in place since 2021 but has largely been optional until now. As of August 2023, providers have started to implement blocking of messages over unregistered numbers. Moving forward, the campaign verification of 10 DLC numbers will be mandatory to avoid message delivery disruptions
What information do I need to acquire a numbering service in the USA for sending SMS?
SMS delivery to recipients in the USA is supported through the use of 10-digit long code (10DLC)numbers, Toll Free Numbers (TFNs) or Shortcode numbers. The use of each of these number services is subject to strict and unique verification and registration requirements.
While each numbering service has their own unique requirements, at a minimum you will need the following information handy to ensure smooth set up and verification:
i) Company’s full registered business name
ii) Company’s US tax ID (US EIN)
iii) Company’s Formal (registered) Address
iv) Company Website
v) Business Contact
vi) Expected volumes of SMS Campaigns
vii) Detailed Use Case of SMS Campaigns
viii) Content Samples of SMS Campaigns
ix) Detailed OPT-In and OPT-Out workflows
Do these registration requirements apply if I’m using a Toll Free Number (TFN) to deliver SMS services to recipients in the US?
Customers who make use of Toll-Free Numbers (TFN) to send messages to recipients in the US also need to register their use cases, however there is a different process to that registration. Please contact support@whispir.com if you wish to initiate the process for TFN Content registration.
Here at Whispir, we are always on hand to help you navigate these compliance requirements to find the most cost-efficient and optimal solution for your needs.
